Africa’s campaign in athletics at the 2012 London Paralympics got off to a promising start when Morocco’s Najat El Garraa (Centre) and Tunisian Raoua Tlili clinched the the gold and silver medals in the women F 40 Discus on Friday (31 August). China’s Men Genjimisu (left claimed the bronze medal in a new Asian record of 30.44m
Morocco’s Najat El Garraa clinch Africa’s first gold medal in athletics at the London Paralympic Games on Friday (31 August).
Competing in the women’s discus (F40), El Garraa carried the day with a new world record of 32.37. Tunisian Raoua Tlili was runner up in a lifetime best of 32.16.
Meanwhile Egypt’s Metawa Aboue Ikhir and Algerian Lahoari Bahlaz each clinched a bronze medal in men’s discus and club throw respectively.
Although she was way behind in fifth place in the women’s (CL T34) 100m Tunisia’s Yousra Ben Jemaa broke new grounds. She covered the distance in 20.52 which is a new Africa record.
