ETHIOPIAN Meresa Hailu Kahsay won the boys 2000m steeplechase in the world’s quickest time ever at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk Ukraine on Friday (12 July).
Kahsay’s winning time of 5:19.99 is a significant improvement from 5:42.20 when he claimed a silver medal at the inaugural Africa Youth Championships in Warri Delta State Nigeria in March.
Such was the pace in the race that Kenyan Nicholas Kiptanui Bett (5:20.92) and Justus Kipkorir Lagat (5.30.00) earned the silver and bronze medals with lifetime best performances.
Morocco’s Hicham Chemlal who was fourth in Warri was again fourth in Donetsk. However he improved his lifetime best from 5:46.83 in Warri to 5:32.92 in Donetsk.
Chemlal was followed across the finish line at the global event by Ethiopian Micheale Atsbaha in a personal best of 5:36.64. Tunisian Soufien Cerni was further down the field in 11th place in a career best of 5:50.31 PB

Morocco’s African Girlls Youth Champion Siba Rhizlane emerged joint bronze medalists with South African Julia du Plessis at the World Youth Championships

Meanwhile on the infield Morocco’s African Youth High Jump Champion Siba Rhizlane clinched a bronze medalist in the girl’s high jump. Rhizlane shared the bronze medal podium space with South African Julia du Plessis.
The African champion and Du Plessis each cleared the bar at the height of 1.70m, 1.75m, and 1.79m on their first attempts. Both failed to surpass the height of 1.82 on all their three attempts.
